Elizabeth Winnel

Elizabeth Winnel moved from Canada to Savannah, Georgia in 2006. She graduated from The Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in illustration. In 2008, Winnel moved to Brooklyn, NY and worked as a painter. She returned to Savannah in 2010 to pursue an MFA in painting, which she completed in 2013.

Winnel instigates conversations about the use of body and ‘selfie’ imagery within cultural spaces and social media. Decontextualized imagery serves as a stand-in for larger meaning. Her approach invites viewer engagement but leaves room for the insertion of individualized perspective. Her works are not about specific stories or people, rather they function as prompts for discourse about figuration, body language, communication and culture.

Winnel has exhibited work nationally and internationally including in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, Nashville, London, Berlin, and Toronto. She currently lives and works in Savannah, Georgia and Brooklyn, New York.
