Reaching the 'tipping point'? Here are 9 ways Savannah is cementing itself as an arts town
Laney Heads to Miami
Art Basel has become almost mainstream in the sense that it’s likely that even non-art people have heard of it and know that it’s one of the most important global art events each year.
But Art Basel Miami is so much more than simply “Art Basel.” It’s really a collection of a number of concurrent art events all happening at the same time time (usually around the first week of December) in and around Miami during Miami Art Week. And this year Savannah’s own Laney Contemporary was on the scene as a part of Untitled Art Fair.
The importance of Laney’s participation in this yearly art gathering can’t be understated. Put simply, a Savannah gallery was invited to stand alongside galleries from all over the world. What does it say about the Savannah art scene when one of our own galleries can offer that kind of global exposure to their artists? What new doors might Laney’s appearance open for the gallery’s other current artists, just by virtue of them being associated with such a gallery? And what kind of impact might the gallery’s potentially elevated station have on Savannah’s artistic reputation in general, in terms of being a place where one might expect world class art?
